Particle Shape Analysis: CAMSIZER: Digital Imaging Particle Size/Shape Analyzer

Source: HORIBA Instruments, Inc.
With hundreds of systems implemented worldwide, the CAMSIZER is the most successful instrument for particle size and particle shape measurement of dry, flowable bulk materials using dynamic digital image analysis. Due to the wide measuring range from 30 µm to 30 mm and the sophisticated sieve correlation, the CAMSIZER is a high-performance alternative to traditional sieve analysis.

HORIBA's CAMSIZER Digital Image Processing Particle Size and Shape Analyzer provides rapid and precise particle size and particle shape analysis for all dry, flowable bulk materials, and powders in the size range from 30µm to 30mm. This technique provides a wide variety of information about the sample, from a general size measurement, to shape parameters that can be closely correlated to specific performance characteristics. This also allows correlation to existing data from techniques as diverse as sieving and sedimentation.

Instrument Features

  • Range: 30 µm - 30mm Allowing measurement of a wide range of sample types.
  • High Resolution: Each particle is scanned in 32 orientations to provide a high-resolution measurement of size and shape. This can be increased to 64 orientations if additional resolution is required.
  • Fast Analysis: Measurement results in 30 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on sample type and statistics required.
  • Powerful Software: The CAMSIZER is equipped with an easy-to-operate, yet versatile quality software package. Powerful data analysis and reporting capabilities allow the user to specify exactly the information required.
  • Ease of Use: With the CAMSIZER's automation of all the measurement steps, routine measurement is simply a matter of adding the sample to the hopper, one click in the software and filling in the sample name.
Principle of Operation
The CAMSIZER uses two linked full-frame CCD cameras (patented). As the sample is fed through the measuring zone, the two cameras collect images of the sample stream. Each particle image is scanned in 32 orientations (optionally 64) to provide an accurate measurement of size and shape parameters. The two cameras, with different resolution, provide a wide dynamic range. The Basic camera provides the larger particle analysis, while the Zoom camera focuses on smaller particles to provide high resolution images of the fine parts of the distribution. Corrections are made for influence of the drop plane of different size particles, throw parabola, and edge threshold recognition of transparent particles.
